A photobook by Spanish photographer Miguel Leache, documenting the festivals in Tokyo during the spring 2025 Kanda Matsuri and Sanja Matsuri.
“Why are the eight million gods smiling, even though the world is shrouded in darkness?”
—from the book
(Publisher’s text)
The author documents Japan’s Shinto festivals—the matsuri—which have their origins in religion, agriculture, and community. They are moments of collective exaltation that revitalize and renew a community’s sense of identity.
Kami No Ude (Sacred Arms) is a multifaceted and richly layered work that invites multiple readings: how do contemporary life and these ancient rituals coexist? What mechanisms have allowed these festivals to remain relevant today? And why are there such evident similarities with other festivities in distant parts of the world, thousands of kilometers away, such as the Saturnalia celebrations of northern Spain or the Romería del Rocío in Huelva?
The design of the book moves through all of these fields of reflection, with its structural and compositional elements shaped in response to them.
